Shinya Aoki’s compelling approach, Meiko Satomura’s glorious retirement, Tim Bosby & Marko Harris reigniting studio wrestling. Plus, a string of violent matches!
I have seen some stuff from the modern Memphis Wrestling and like the studio wrestling feel to their presentation. They do a solid job building storylines in a week-to-week territorial promotion feel. I have always enjoyed the studio wrestling setting in general, but the only one I actually saw it as it aired was the NWA show at 6:05 PM on Saturday nights.
Yeah I like the setup and wish there was more of it especially to help younger wrestlers get better working programs. Its something the 80s generation benefitted a ton from. Everyone had reps somewhere doing promos, feuds and angles.
NWA (the modern version) did a studio wrestling setting for the first few years or so when they launched in 2019 or so. Did you ever see that? I liked the feel of it. The studio was even made to look visually like the old NWA Saturday night show from the ‘80s.
Re studio wrestling, I’ve come across a few episodes of ICW from the late ‘70s/early ‘80s recently (Angelo Poffo’s promotion and where Randy Savage was featured heavily early in his career). I thought those capture the feel of studio wrestling well. My understanding is most of the masters from this promotion were taped over, so there’s very little of the footage in existence. Would like to see more.
Not in the moment but I’ve seen a few clips of the interviews guys like Eddie Kingston and Eli Drake/LA Knight did. it really suited their strengths.
It’s a shame so much of that older stuff is lost to time. I watched a 70s Poffos match for something I’m publishing tomorrow and they were great heels. It was Angelo and Lanny.
