August 1995 WCW: Will Hogan Survive the Dungeon of Doom?
A Collision in Korea and a Clash of the Champions. Arn Anderson and Ric Flair explode. A complete look at the month inside!
August featured Clash of the Champions 31 as the marquee event early in the month on August 6. The build centered around Hulk Hogan challenging any member of the Dungeon of Doom to wrestle on the live Main Event beforehand, with the promise that he would then return to the Dungeon at the Clash. That member turned out to be an old nemesis, Kamala. Their match ended in a disqualification, and Randy Savage and Sting came to Hogan’s aid, prompting Eric Bischoff to declare, “We have a war.”
What you’ll find below:
Recap: A rundown of the major happenings this month.
Recommendations: A mix of interesting matches, promos, and segments.
Takeaways: My key points that stood out from the month.
Show-by-Show Notes: Comments from going through each show.

At Clash of the Champions, Hogan asked his best friend, Jimmy Hart, to keep the title belt safe for him as he ventured into the Dungeon of Doom. Hogan referenced The Giant being Andre the Giant’s son and even mentioned his Irish heritage, claiming the McMahons were “shaking in their boots.” Hulkamania, he proclaimed, was more powerful than ever. Hogan entered the Dungeon to confront The Giant, only to be overwhelmed by the group. Surprisingly, Vader emerged to save Hogan. Later, Hogan, Sting, Savage, and Vader declared war on the Dungeon of Doom, setting up a War Games match for September.
The buildup for War Games dominated much of August. The Taskmaster repeatedly warned Hogan not to trust Vader. Hogan confronted Vader in the locker room, where Vader admitted they shared common enemies. Hogan offered Vader another title shot if they teamed up, and Vader accepted. The Taskmaster attempted to shift the balance of power by revealing that Meng had joined the Dungeon of Doom and had been given a deadly golden spike.
Meanwhile, Vader had his own issues to settle in a handicap match against Arn Anderson and Ric Flair at the Clash. In the lead-up, Flair appeared increasingly unhinged, while Arn tried to keep things together. During the match, Flair hesitated to get involved, leaving Arn to take the brunt of Vader’s offense. Only after Arn hit a spinebuster did Flair finally tag in. Vader eventually overcame both men, pinning Arn after a powerbomb. Flair was furious with Arn for the loss, and the crowd eagerly anticipated Arn finally snapping at Ric.
Tensions between Arn and Flair continued throughout August. They teamed together occasionally, with Arn often carrying the load, but their partnership grew strained. Both men publicly denied any rift, calling it “just another day at the office.” However, when Flair faced Alex Wright on the August 19 episode of Saturday Night, Arn refused to assist him. Flair struggled but ultimately won on his own. After the match, Flair confronted Arn, who stated he wanted to see “the killer” in Flair again. Flair challenged Arn to a match, but Arn dismissed him, claiming Flair wasn’t “man enough.” Arn explained that over the past year and a half, he had watched Flair fall apart, becoming unfocused and using Arn as a scapegoat. Arn recounted nearly losing his life in England because of Flair and declared he was no one’s doormat. The two were eventually booked to face each other at Fall Brawl in September. Flair, visibly upset, accused Arn of needing to prove his own worth, while Arn remained focused on bringing back the real Ric Flair.
August also saw the PPV broadcast of Collision in Korea, a joint event with New Japan Pro-Wrestling held earlier in the year in North Korea. The show featured matches filmed over two days, with Eric Bischoff and Mike Tenay providing commentary. The event highlighted a renewed partnership between WCW and NJPW and showcased several talents who would later join WCW. The main event saw Antonio Inoki defeat Ric Flair.
Other developments included the continued hype for the debut of WCW Monday Nitro in September, with the announcement of Steve “Mongo” McMichael joining the commentary team. The Renegade continued his winning streak as TV Champion, while Diamond Dallas Page scored a significant victory over Alex Wright to earn a TV Title shot at Fall Brawl. Kurasawa suffered his first loss in a tag team match against Hawk and Sting but retaliated by breaking Hawk’s arm. Flyin’ Brian Pillman and Johnny B. Badd set up a match for Fall Brawl to determine the next contender for the U.S. Title, with both men determined to elevate their current status. Jim Duggan and Big Bubba kicked off an undercard feud, with Duggan taping his fists and claiming his great-grandmother was a “taped fist champion.”
In the tag team division, The Stud Stable continued their feud with Harlem Heat, the reigning World Tag Team Champions. Sherri kissed Colonel Rob Parker to secure a title match for Harlem Heat, only to seemingly fall in love with him. Sherri’s pursuit of Parker became a recurring theme throughout the month. The Blue Bloods remained in contention.

August 1995 WCW Takeaways
The conflict between Ric Flair and Arn Anderson initially felt a bit forced, but they ended up delivering some of the best promo work of the year. They effectively played on the idea that Flair was lost without Arn and that Arn had finally had enough. A key element of the storyline is that there’s no real bad blood—Arn simply wants Ric to get back to being Ric as they head toward Nitro.
The buildup for Nitro is ramped up across TV, and while it’s intriguing, it’s still unclear what exactly it will be.
One of the funniest undercard storylines has been the ongoing “romance” between Sherri and Col. Rob Parker. Having more Sherri on TV is always a good thing.
If the Collision in Korea event had been held somewhere with fans that were reacting, it might have been the show of the year.
The Dungeon of Doom has fully transitioned into feeling like its own universe, and it’s disappointing when talents like Meng and Vader get pulled into it. Trust is a recurring theme that Kevin Sullivan often emphasized as a booker. Can Hogan trust Vader? You can see a lot of the booking strategies Sullivan would later use with WCW/nWo in the Hogan/Dungeon of Doom storyline.

August 4, 1995 WCW/NJPW Collision in Korea
One time event they say. Eric Bischoff, Mike Tenay, and the future Sonny Onoo hosting. Wrestling diplomacy at its finest.
Too Cold Scorpio v. Chris Benoit. Both competing in New Japan. Good athletic match. Tough to get any sort of reaction and they don’t go all out. What they did looked very good. Benoit wins with a great diving headbutt.
Tokimitsu Ishizawa vs. Yuji Nagata. Decent short young lions match. Nagata with the kicks. Ishizawa wants to go to the mat. Nagata wins. Bischoff doing his “Back leg” stuff on commentary.
El Samurai & Tadao Yasuda vs. Ookami Gundan (Hiro Saito & Masahiro Chono). Ok nothing great. Chono looks like a boss. Yasuda very early in his career. Samurai working the hardest.
Akira Hokuto & Bull Nakano v Manami Toyota & Mariko Yoshida. A total blast. Bull and Hokuto look awesome coming out. All four just go for it. Exciting regardless of the lack of crowd reaction. Yoshida really pops here. Nakano hits a massive legdrop to end it. Recommended.
Scott Norton vs. Shinya Hashimoto. Solid twenty minute time limit draw. There’s some good parts to this but they’re not going all out in between. Norton’s in his peak shape here. It sounds like this showing got Bischoff to bring him over to WCW,
Hawk Warrior v Tadao Yasuda. Quick and ok. Hawk no sells a lot and wins.
Steiner Brothers v Hiroshi Hase & Kensuke Sasaki. Very good match. By far the most intense and physical match shown. Steiners seem like they just want to beat people up. Hase’s so good. Sasaki hits some big suplexes himself. They miss the Scott Steiner Screwdriver for the finish. Recommended.
Antonio Inoki v Ric Flair. Good match. Feels like a big deal and they work a nice match for the crowd. Some good chain wrestling. Flair busts out some different moves like the STF. There’s a great struggle over the figure four. Inoki still has the fire. Gets the win. Well done.

He’s got a date with Dungeon of Doom tonight on the Clash. Starting to set up War Games. Recommended.
August 6, 1995 WCW Clash Of The Champions 31 - Daytona Beach, FL
Road Warrior Hawk & Sting vs. Stud Stable (Kurasawa & Meng). Decent hard hitting match. Michael Buffer’s doing the intros. Sting and Hawk hit the Doomsday Device on Kurasawa and pin him. A bit surprising because he just debuted. Kurasawa breaks Hawk’s arm after!
Recap of Hogan declaring war. Shots of Dungeon.
Bunkhouse Buck & Dick Slater interview. Parker puts over Kurasawa Krush. Parker ready for romance tonight
Diamond Dallas Page vs. Alex Wright. Solid match. Neither seem very over. Wright’s not dancing and gets booed anyway. There’s good structure to this. Wright misses a dive and DDP pins him. Nice finish. The DDP push continues.
Ric Flair & Arn Anderson interview. Flair thinks Vader won't get through Arn. Arn's mission is clear cut. Focused. Knows exactly what his job is. Good promo.
WCW World Television Title The Renegade (c) vs. Paul Orndorff. Ok short match. Renegade retains after Orndroff gets distracted with the ref.
Vader interview. Keep pushing this as history. Never been done before. It's vader time!
Harlem Heat & Sister Sherri vs. The Stud Stable (Bunkhouse Buck, Dick Slater, Col. Robert Parker). Fun deal. Parker’s funny because he now wrestles like a manager. He gets suplexed. Sherri comes in to the biggest pop of the match. She misses a splash and is out cold! She wakes up, kisses Parker and gets the pin. She won’t stop going after him. Now she’s the one in love.
Hulk Hogan interview. Cuts a silly promo on Dungeon of Doom. Still hammering home Jimmy Hart as his best friend. He wants Jimmy to keep the title belt safe for him. Refers to Giant as Andre The Giant's son! Talks about his Irish people. Mentions McMahons shaking in their boots. Hulkamania more powerful than ever. Unhinged Hogan here. Recommended.
Macho Man video
Dungeon of Doom: Hulk Hogan enters. Held Taskmaster's whole army at bay. Wants to fight his Giant. Giant grabs his chain and chokes him down. All beat Hogan down. Vader saves Hogan. Giant no sells. Big standoff. One true immortal. That was it.
Fall Brawl promo. Nitro promotion
Vader vs. Arn Anderson & Ric Flair - Handicap Match. Good match. Get about ten minutes. The story is that Arn’s annoyed that Flair won’t get in and he has to take a beating from Vader. Arn hits an awesome spinebuster and now Flair wants in. He blows it and Arn has to come in and help. Vader overcomes them both and power bombs Arn for the win. Flair’s upset with Arn after and gets in his face. This Flair/Arn deal feels rushed and forced. The crowd wants to see Arn deck Ric.
Hulk Hogan, Sting and Randy Savage out. Hogan screaming about facing Andre The Giant's son. Declaring war. Vader out in his face. What's your trip? No one tells Vader what time it is. Punks. They’re the War Games team vs Dungeon of Doom
They promote the debut of Nitro a lot on this show.

Arn Anderson & Ric Flair v Marcus Bagwell & Jim Duggan. Solid match that Flair and Arn take a lot of. Inset promo with Arn about him and Flair agreeing to disagree. Arn hits a nice DDT but Flair takes the pin. Arn continues to be the difference maker. Aside from The Renegade deal, they’ve really booked Arn well all year. I like that they’re doing this instead of having him just settle into a supporting role with Flair.
August 14, 1995 WCW Prime
