April 1995 WCW: Will Ric Flair Be Reinstated?
My journey through 1995 World Championship Wrestling continues with a recap of April, including recommendations, takeaways, and show notes.
With no Pay-Per-View scheduled until Slamboree in May, much of the television focused on whether Ric Flair would be reinstated as an active wrestler following his retirement at the hands of Hulk Hogan back at Halloween Havoc 94 and the ongoing tournament to crown a new United States Heavyweight Champion.
What you’ll find below:
Recap: A rundown of everything that happened this month.
Recommendations: A mix of interesting matches, promos, and segments.
Takeaways: My key points that stood out from the month.
Show-by-Show Notes: Comments from going through each show.

The decision to reinstate Ric Flair was first brought to the WCW Executive Committee. The vote ended in a two-to-two tie, with Christine LeBlanc of France abstaining. As a result, the requirements for Flair’s reinstatement were not met, and he remained inactive. The following week, Flair purchased television time to petition fans with the slogan “Be Fair to Flair.” Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage appealed directly to the Executive Committee and Hogan swayed the decision. Flair was reinstated, and the Slamboree main event was set: Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage would face Vader and Ric Flair in a tag team match.
Almost immediately after being reinstated, Flair became involved in Vader and Arn Anderson’s match against Stars & Stripes. Bobby Heenan claimed that Flair’s behavior leading up to this point had been a ruse to secure his reinstatement. Arn Anderson, meanwhile, transitioned from the Stud Stable to realigning with Flair. Flair’s first televised match since October took place on the April 29 episode of Saturday Night, where he teamed with Arn Anderson to face Brad Armstrong and Tim Horner. The match escalated into chaos when Vader powerbombed Horner on the floor, prompting Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan to rush out for the save. Despite their efforts, Flair, Vader, and Arn still held the numbers advantage—until The Renegade arrived and neutralized Arn.
The U.S. Title Tournament received significant time on television, with most entrants being highlighted before their first-round matches. The tournament was planned to span a couple of months, culminating in the finals at Bash at the Beach in June. In the first round, Flyin’ Brian defeated Bunkhouse Buck, Sting overcame Arn Anderson, Steve Austin bested Jim Duggan, and Meng beat Marcus Bagwell. Outside of the tournament, Sting’s feud with Big Bubba Rogers intensified, with the two signing on to settle their rivalry in a Lights Out Match at Slamboree.
Other notable developments included the continuation of the feud between Harlem Heat and The Nasty Boys, with the latter receiving one last title shot in their hometown at Slamboree. Meanwhile, The Blue Bloods gained momentum, racking up wins and looking strong in the process. Steve Austin reunited with Col. Parker, and Alex Wright entered the TV Title picture, pushing Arn Anderson to a time-limit draw. Kevin Sullivan finally snapped on The Butcher, taking him out. The Butcher subsequently was referred to as "The Man With No Name." Diamond Dallas Page claimed to have won $13 million at a Las Vegas casino, leading to a significant upgrade in his presentation. Meanwhile, Diamond Doll continued receiving gifts from Evad.'
April 1995 WCW Recommendations:
Full credit to everyone out there who makes all of this accessible. You know who you are!
Lord Steven Regal and Robert Eaton go fine dining in England (Apr. 1 Worldwide)
Harlem Heat vs. Tim Horner & Brad Armstrong (Apr. 1 Saturday Night). Really good competitive TV tag. Horner & Armstrong make for a good team.
Arn Anderson & Steve Austin vs. Alex Wright & Johnny B. Badd (Apr. 1 Saturday Night). Really good match. Austin’s giving max effort since coming back and everyone is really motivated.
Sting and Randy Savage interview (Apr. 8 Worldwide). Another great unhinged promo from these two. They chop each other very hard.
WCW Executive Committee votes on Ric Flair’s reinstatement (Apr. 8 Worldwide). Campy funny ‘behind the scenes’ of the WCW Executive Committee that’s often eluded to be rarely seen.
Blue Bloods formation (Apr. 8 Worldwide). A wonderful segment recapping their formation.
Blue Bloods vs. Brad Armstrong & Tim Horner (Apr. 8 Worldwide). Stellar match. Eaton especially is very motivated. Four great vets.
Sting vs. Steve Austin (Apr. 8 Saturday Night). Sting seems to rise to Austin’s work ethic here and again this is shades of a previous era of WCW in terms of in-ring.
Arn Anderson vs. Alex Wright (Apr. 15 Worldwide). Arn does a really good job with Wright here.
Bunkhouse Buck & Dick Slater vs. Brad Armstrong & Tim Horner (Apr. 15 Pro). The hits keep on coming from Brad and im.
Arn Anderson & Vader vs. Stars And Stripes + post match interview (Apr. 15 Saturday Night). The match is fun, very spirited and the post-match is even better. Flair is back.
Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Jimmy Hart meet with the Executive Committee (Apr. 22 Worldwide). The full segment from the previous SN where they get Flair reinstated.
Monster Maniacs and Renegade promo (Apr. 22 Worldwide). Very over the top with lighting effects for Renegade.
Vader, Ric Flair, Arn Anderson promo (Apr. 22 Worldwide). It was short lived but these three had something together. Vader could have been a great Horseman.
Diamond Dallas wins $13 million in Vegas (Apr. 22 Pro). Another excellent bit of progression from DDP.
Harlem Heat vs. Johnny B. Badd & Brian Pillman (Apr. 22 Pro). Badd and Pillman make for a good team even though neither has much going on.
Kevin Sullivan interview (Apr. 22 Saturday Night). Sullivan cracks me up talking about the big dark cloud. This feels like the start of the Dungeon of Doom.
Sting vs. Arn Anderson (Apr. 22 Saturday Night). They get a lot of time and have a good TV match. Arn does a lot of great little stuff in this to fill the time.
Monster Maniacs promo (Apr. 29 Worldwide). Apparently The Renegade is the greatest Monster Maniac. These have to be seen.
Big Bubba promo + Sting feud video package (Apr. 29 Saturday Night). Bubba’s been killing it in this feud and this is a nice overview.
Marcus Bagwell vs. Meng (Apr. 29 Saturday Night). Pretty fun match with Meng working like a total monster.
Flyin' Brian vs. Dino Casanova + interview (Apr. 29 Saturday Night). Brian tries to work a real match and gets dropped on his head. Cuts a good promo after.
Kevin Sullivan interview (Apr. 29 Saturday Night). Again Sullivan is doing his best here.
Arn Anderson & Ric Flair vs. Brad Armstrong & Tim Horner + post-match (April 29, 1995 WCW Saturday Night). Flair’s first TV match since April and he still has great chemistry with Brad Armstrong. Strong post-match angle.
Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage promo with Renegade running wild (April 29, 1995 WCW Saturday Night). Great energy as they hype the Slamboree tag.
Wrestler of the Month: Arn Anderson
Match of the Month: Blue Bloods vs. Brad Armstrong & Tim Horner (Apr. 8 Worldwide)
Promo of the Month: Ric Flair, Arn Anderson & Vader interview (April 15, 1995 WCW Saturday Night)
April 1995 WCW Takeaways
The best month for TV wrestling of the year with plenty of strong matches. A couple of the catalysts were Steve Austin getting back in the mix and the US Title Tournament. Arn Anderson & Steve Austin versus Alex Wright & Johnny B. Badd, Blue Bloods versus Brad Armstrong & Tim Horner, Steve Austin versus Sting and Sting versus Arn Anderson were all strong.
This was a no PPV month with Slamboree not until May. Bischoff and some of the crew were in North Korea taping Collision in Korea at the end of the month.
They’ve done a good job with the US Title Tournament. Most of the wrestlers involved got squash matches and promos before it started. There’s plenty of big names involved and it’s running concurrently with other feuds. Feels like a big deal and has given the TV something extra.
I liked them going through the motions with Ric Flair’s reinstatement to wrestling. He came back still crazy but they tried to make it all make sense.
The Renegade stuff continues to be shockingly low rent for something associated with the top program.

Brad Armstrong & Tim Horner squash. Ok. Not really squash match type guys.
Kevin Sullivan squash. Hogan chants. Post-match interview. Butcher was trying to cling onto the communist dream of Hulkamania. There’s a big dark cloud over The Man With No Name. He’s no longer The Butcher. Sullivan wants to destroy every last bit of Hulkamania in him. His dream will be everyone’s nightmare. Feels like the start of Dungeon of Doom.
Sgt. Craig Pittman squash.
Tony Schiavone talks about one of the most prominent 'outlaw wrestlers' heading to WCW. Think it’s Sabu.
Sting vs. Arn Anderson - US Title Tournament First Round. Good match that gets a lot of time. It’s almost jarring to see matches this long on WCW TV in 1995. Starts slow with Arn being cautious. Ric Flair will be wrestling next week on TV. The Finals of this tournament aren’t until the next PPV - Great American Bash in June so they’ll be taking their time. Arn hits a spinebuster as a cut off and still sells his leg. Later Arn hits a nice fakeout DDT but celebrates too much. Arn has a counter for the Stinger Splash. Lots of great little stuff. Sting wins with the Scorpion Deathlock. Post-match interview. Facing Big Bubba in a Lights Out Match at Slamboree which means anything goes. He also puts over Arn which tells you how real the match was. Recommended.
April 23, 1995 WCW Main Event

Johnny B. Badd squash
Slamboree Control Center: Hogan and Savage promo. Not worried because they have The Renegade. The greatest Monster Maniac. These promos have to been seen to be believed. Recommended

Pretty Wonderful squash.

Vader squash. Great power bomb. One on floor too.
Johnny B. Badd squash.
The Man With No Name squash.
Big Bubba promo. Show a video package with his history with Sting dating back to the triangle match. Bubba doesn't care about Sting's heart and soul.
Marcus Bagwell vs. Meng - US Title Tournament First Round. Fun match. Bagwell avoids the kicks and big moves. Meng’s working like a total monster. One punch drops Bagwell. Meng walks through damage. Wins with the kick. Really enjoying this Meng run.
Flyin' Brian vs. Dino Casanova. Fun little match. Brian works a real match with Dino. Scary spot where Dino drops Brian on his head. Maybe that’s why he doesn’t get much offense usually. Post-match interview on facing Meng in the next round of US Title Tournament. Not waving his white flag. Good promo.
Kevin Sullivan squash. Post-match interview. He’s been having dreams. Black cloud crept into him. He’s afraid. Warns Butcher not to show up at Slamboree. One of them has to save the other.
Dave Sullivan comeback promo training with kids. Some of the stuff here would have been fine if it were someone good
Alex Wright squash. Post-match interview. Puts over Arn as someone he admires and respects but he’s young and hungry.
Gene on Hotline really pushed the arrival of three wrestlers (Guerrero, Malenko, Benoit?)
Arn Anderson & Ric Flair (w/Vader) v Brad Armstrong & Tim Horner.Good match. This is Flair’s first time wrestling since October. Tim & Brad bring the energy early. Flair and Brad pick up like it’s the old days. Flair’s jawing at Hogan fans, trying to get at him. He’s crazy in a good way here. Brad looks phenomenal in this working with Flair. He runs right into a spinebuster for the pin. Vader power bombs Horner on the floor! Savage comes in to help but gets taken out. Hogan’s actually here! Crowd erupts for him. Vader no sells Hogan and Flair takes out his knee. Arn has a chair. Things are feeling very real for moment but The Renegade is here and punches out Arn. Arn makes a great shocked face.
Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage promo with Renegade running wild. Hogan thanks them for the wakeup call. Macho wonders if it’s the beginning of the end or the end of the beginning. Slamboree’s going to get crazy. Savage is always a money promo. Hogan promises a few special family members at ringside for the match. Great energy for this.
March 1995 WCW: Who Is The Ultimate Surprise?
The major event in March was the debut of the new pay-per-view event, WCW Uncensored. The promotion focused on it being a no-rules event with numerous stipulation matches. Since it was billed as an unsanctioned event, none of the WCW titles were on the line.
